Opening Statement and presentation of evidence by the Defence in the Al Hassan case: Practical information

On Monday, 9 May 2022 at 9:30 (Hague time), the Defence in the case of The Prosecutor v. Al Hassan Ag Abdoul Aziz Ag Mohamed Ag Mahmoud will make its opening statement before Trial Chamber X of the International Criminal Court (ICC). Mr Al Hassan is represented by Lead Counsel Melinda Taylor and Associate Counsel Michiel Pestman. The statement will be made in open session and can last up to four hours. The first Defence witness, an expert, is expected to start testifying on 10 May 2022.

On Tuesday 8 February 2022 at 9:30 (Hague time), the Legal Representatives of Victims ("LRV") in the case of The Prosecutor v. Al Hassan Ag Abdoul Aziz Ag Mohamed Ag Mahmoud will make their opening statement before Trial Chamber X of the International Criminal Court (ICC). Counsel Seydou Doumbia, Mayombo Kassongo and Fidel Nsita Luvengika are representing 1946 victims in this case. Their statement will be made in open session and is expected to last one hour.

On 14 July 2020, the trial in the case The Prosecutor v. Al Hassan Ag Abdoul Aziz Ag Mohamed Ag Mahmoud opened before Trial Chamber X of the International Criminal Court (ICC) for crimes against humanity and war crimes allegedly committed in Timbuktu (Mali). Trial Chamber X is composed of Judge Antoine Kesia-Mbe Mindua, Presiding Judge, Judge Tomoko Akane and Judge Kimberly Prost.

Aujourd'hui, commence le procès tant attendu des crimes inimaginables qui ont été commis au Mali.

Tombouctou a vécu pendant presqu'un an, d'avril 2012 à janvier 2013, dans la violence physique et morale infligée par les groupes armés Ansar Dine et Al Qaeda au Maghreb Islamique. Tombouctou, « la perle du désert », où la population vivait en paix depuis des années, a été soumise à leurs diktats. Tombouctou a subi leur tyrannie.

Al Hassan case: ICC Pre-Trial Chamber I accepts amendments to the charges

Today, 23 April 2020, Pre-Trial Chamber I of the International Criminal Court ("ICC" or "the Court") issued a confidential decision partially granting the Prosecutor's request to modify the charges against Al Hassan Ag Abdoul Aziz Ag Mohamed Ag Mahmoud (Mr Al Hassan). Al Hassan Case: ICC Appeals Chamber confirms the Pre-Trial Chamber’s decision on the admissibility and the sufficient gravity of the case

Today, 19 February 2020, the Appeals Chamber of the International Criminal Court (« ICC » or « Court ») delivered its judgment unanimously rejecting the appeal of Mr Al Hassan Ag Abdoul Aziz Ag Mohamed Ag Mahmoud and consequently confirming Pre-Trial Chamber I's decision of 27 September 2019, which had considered that the case against Mr Al Hassan is of sufficient gravity to justify further action by the Court.

Al Hassan case: Trial to open on 14 July 2020

: 6 January 2020

On 6 January 2020, Trial Chamber X of the International Criminal Court (ICC) scheduled the opening of the trial in the case of The Prosecutor v. Al Hassan Ag Abdoul Aziz Ag Mohamed Ag Mahmoud for 14 July 2020. In addition, the Chamber decided that the presentation of evidence by the Prosecution in the case will commence on 25 August 2020.

These dates were set by the Chamber after noting the respective submissions by the Prosecution and the Defence as well as the necessary time for the disclosure of evidence and other materials.
