Dr. Geoff Dancy: "Designing Indicators: How to Assess the ICC’s Performance"

Dr. Geoff Dancy is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Political Science at Tulane University in New Orleans, Louisiana. He studies international human rights law, transitional justice, international criminal law, and pragmatism. Abroad, he closely follows events in Sri Lanka and Kenya, as well as the operations of the International Criminal Court. At home, he thinks a good deal about gun violence, mass incarceration, domestic abuse, and other symptoms of structural violence in the state of Louisiana. He is the Director of the Transitional Justice Research Collaborative, a group focused on collecting data and developing theory about human rights prosecutions, truth commissions, and other mechanisms of post-authoritarian or post-conflict justice. In Dr Dancy's contribution to the ICC Forum presented by UCLA, he had previously discussed and assessed performance indicators. His lecture will therefore address the relevance of such indicators for the Court, methodology, and substance, and whether or not certain aspects should be part of these performance assessments. Dr. Dancy's work has been published in the American Journal of International Law, International Organization, Law & Society Review, International Studies Quarterly, and International Criminal Law Review.
