Jean Allain: "Revisiting the Crime of Enslavement 20 Years On"

Jean Allain is Professor of Law at Monash University, Australia and also an Associate Dean of Research and Professor of International Law with the Wilberforce Institute for the Study of Slavery and Emancipation ("WISE") at the University of Hull, UK. He holds an Extraordinary Professorship with the Centre of Human Rights of the Faculty of Law, University of Pretoria, South Africa, and is currently Visiting Professor at Beijing Normal University (2017-2020). He received his PhD from the Graduate Institute for International Studies at the University of Geneva (HEI).

Professor Jean Allain is a Special Adviser to Anti-Slavery International, the world's oldest human rights organisation. He previously clerked for the first President of the Yugoslav Tribunal (ICTY), Antonio Cassese. In 2007, Professor Allain delivered a lecture on the Definition of Slavery and the Crime of Enslavement as part of the OTP Guest Lecture Series and in 2016, he appeared as an Expert Witness on behalf of the Government of Brazil before the Inter-American Court of Human Rights, where he gave evidence on the legal parameters of slavery, servitude, and forced labour. He has published a number of books on slavery including The Law and Slavery (2015), Slavery in International Law (2013), and The Travaux Preparatoires of Slavery Conventions (2008). The forthcoming, The Last Waltz of the Law of Nations: A Translation of the 1803 Edition of de Rayneval's The Institutions of Natural Law and the Law of Nations, will be published by Oxford University Press in 2019.
