Prof. Alette Smeulers: “Typology of Perpetrators of International Crimes”

Prof. Alette Smeulers is a professor of International Criminology at Tilburg University, the Netherlands. Before starting to work at Tilburg University, Prof. Smeulers worked at the VU University, where she initiated and was the first director of the master programme of International Crimes and Criminology. The prime focus of Prof. Smeulers’ research is on perpetrators and causes of international crimes and the international criminal prosecution thereof. She has studied the transformation process of ordinary people into perpetrators of international crimes and developed a typology of perpetrators of international crimes. Prof. Smeulers has lectured in the Netherlands and abroad on the subject and has published extensively. Important publications are the co-edited book Supranational Criminology – towards a criminology of international crimes; the textbook entitled International crimes and other gross human rights violations and an article published in the British Journal of Criminology, Studying the microdynamics of the Rwandan genocide. She has also founded and manages the research network on Supranational Criminology (www.supranationalcriminology.org).
