In partnership with the Northern Uganda Media Club (NUMC), the Court’s Outreach Programme is currently targeting journalists working for local radios and newspapers in the Acholi, Lango, Madi and Teso sub-regions of northern Uganda. A series of thematic workshops have been conducted and to date, over 200 media house representatives have benefited from the programme.

The one-day workshops were organised in the towns of Gulu and Soroti on 15 and 18 November 2007, respectively, during which 82 journalists were engaged in dialogue with Court officials.

Outreach staff presented an update on decisions made by Pre-Trial Chamber II during 2007 and also explained how the Chamber has addressed issues related to the participation of victims such as the lifting of redacted information from documents; such redactions having been imposed to protect the safety of victims or witnesses. In addition, the Chamber has been monitoring the status of the execution of arrest warrants against Joseph Kony, Vincent Otti, Okot Odhiambo and Dominic Ongwen. On 11 July 2007, Pre-Trial Chamber II terminated the proceedings against Raska Lukwiya after his death certificate was provided to the Court.  A representative from the Office of the Prosecutor also explained that the Prosecutor is continuing to analyse allegations of crimes committed by other persons.

Participants took the opportunity to ask questions and any concerns raised were addressed by the Court officials. Participants also committed themselves to sharing information about the court and the international justice system.

In his closing remarks, the President of the Northern Uganda Media Club, Mr Justine Moro, encouraged the ICC to hold regular press updates so as to help journalists to report accurately.
