ICC Prosecutor, Mr Karim A. A. Khan QC, meets with the President of Colombia, H.E. Mr Iván Duque, at the Seat of the Court in The Hague
Today, I was delighted to receive H.E. Mr Iván Duque, President of Colombia and his delegation at the Seat of the International Criminal Court ("ICC" or the "Court"), in The Hague, The Netherlands.
This visit follows our productive discussions held in Bogota in October 2021, providing a valuable opportunity to further discuss and make progress, particularly with respect to the implementation of the ground breaking Cooperation Agreement I signed with the President during that visit, and to explore avenues for my Office to continue supporting national accountability efforts within the framework of this Agreement.
The establishment of the Cooperation Agreement represented a collective commitment to strengthen and accelerate accountability efforts in Colombia. During our meeting, President Duque reaffirmed his commitment and that of his Government to implement every provision of the Cooperation Agreement. I also informed him that my Office remains firmly committed to supporting this work, including through continued dialogue with the national authorities and other key stakeholders.
I was also pleased to accept the gracious invitation extended to me by President Duque to return to Bogota in July of this year to continue my discussions with relevant authorities to exchange on concrete steps adopted to advance genuine domestic proceedings. I equally welcomed his proposal to hold a high-level regional summit focused on complementarity and judicial cooperation during my visit. I very much look forward to my participation in that timely event and to the anticipated rich discussions on these critically important issues.
I take this opportunity to convey my sincere appreciation to President Duque for his assurances that accountability remains a priority for Colombia and to renew my support to the valuable work of the Special Jurisdiction for Peace ("SJP"), the Attorney's General Office, and that of the other national institutions in their endeavour to end impunity for Rome Statute crimes in Colombia. It is of paramount importance that progress is sustained and that the Government of Colombia continues to give the space to the competent state entities and transitional justice mechanisms to carry out with the work that remains to be done.
The path ahead requires a great deal of stamina on the part of the national authorities, and, in particular, of its judicial institutions. My Office will continue to be a partner of Colombia in its quest for accountability until it is finally and fully achieved.

Tuve hoy el placer de recibir al Excmo. Sr. Iván Duque, Presidente de Colombia, y su delegación en la Sede de la Corte Penal Internacional ("CPI" o la "Corte") en La Haya, Países Bajos.
La visita, que tiene lugar tras los intercambios productivos mantenidos en Bogotá en octubre de 2021, ofrece una valiosa oportunidad de seguir deliberando y avanzando, en particular con respecto a la implementación del innovador Acuerdo de Cooperación que firmé con el Presidente durante esa visita, y de estudiar maneras de que mi Fiscalía siga respaldando las iniciativas nacionales de rendición de cuentas en el marco de este Acuerdo.
El establecimiento del Acuerdo de Cooperación obedeció a la voluntad colectiva de fortalecer y acelerar las iniciativas de rendición de cuentas en Colombia. Durante nuestro encuentro, el Presidente Duque reafirmó su voluntad y la de su Gobierno de implementar todas las disposiciones del Acuerdo de Cooperación. También le informé de que mi Fiscalía seguía firmemente decidida a apoyar esta labor, en particular dialogando de forma permanente con las autoridades nacionales y otras partes interesadas fundamentales.
También tuve el gusto de aceptar la amable invitación que me dirigió el Presidente Duque de volver a Bogotá en julio del año en curso para seguir dialogando con las autoridades competentes a fin de intercambiar sobre las medidas concretas adoptadas para impulsar procesos nacionales genuinos. También acogí con satisfacción su propuesta de celebrar durante mi visita una cumbre regional de alto nivel dedicada a la complementariedad y la cooperación judicial. Aguardo con sumo interés la oportunidad de participar en ese evento tan oportuno y de asistir a los enriquecedores debates que seguramente mantendremos en torno a estas cuestiones de suma importancia.
Aprovecho esta oportunidad para transmitir al Presidente Duque mi sincero agradecimiento por sus garantías de que la rendición de cuentas sigue siendo una cuestión prioritaria para Colombia y renovar mi apoyo a la valiosa labor de la Jurisdicción Especial para la Paz, la Fiscalía General de la Nación y otras instituciones nacionales en su empeño por poner fin a la impunidad en relación con los crímenes cometidos en Colombia que entran en el ámbito del Estatuto de Roma. Es de importancia capital que el progreso sea sostenido y que el Gobierno de Colombia siga proporcionando el espacio necesario a las entidades estatales y mecanismos de justicia transicional competentes para que lleven a cabo la labor que sigue pendiente.
El camino que queda por delante requiere un gran esfuerzo por parte de las autoridades nacionales, y en particular de sus instituciones judiciales. Mi Fiscalía seguirá siendo un socio de Colombia en su búsqueda de rendición de cuentas hasta que ésta termine de alcanzarse por completo.
