Libya: ICC Prosecutor Briefs Security Council

On Wednesday 7 November 2012, in New York, International Criminal Court (ICC) Prosecutor Fatou Bensouda will brief the United Nations Security Council on the situation in Libya.

This is the fourth report to the Council by the Prosecutor pursuant to UNSCR 1970 (2011) and Prosecutor Bensouda’s first report since taking office in June.

The Prosecutor will update the Council on the case against Saif Al-Islam Gaddafi and Abdullah Al-Sennussi, and the ongoing investigation in Libya.

The ICC is an independent, permanent court that investigates and prosecutes persons accused of the most serious crimes of international concern, namely genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes if national authorities with jurisdiction are unwilling or unable to do so genuinely. The Office of the Prosecutor is currently investigating in seven situations: The Democratic Republic of Congo, Uganda, the Darfur region of Sudan, Central African Republic, Kenya, Libya and Ivory Coast. The Office is also currently conducting preliminary examinations analyzing alleged crimes committed on the territory of Honduras, Republic of Korea, Afghanistan, Mali and Nigeria, as well as checking if genuine national proceedings are being carried out in Guinea, Colombia and Georgia.
