Around 25 people representing 60 families still living in Shaumiani, in Georgia, attend the ICC information session

A former military base in the small village of Shaumiani, in Georgia’s Marneuli District, is not the obvious choice for a family home. Shaumiani is one of Georgia’s settlements for internally displaced people, set up after the August 2008 conflict. Around 60 families still live there. It is located some 60 kilometres south of the country’s capital, Tbilisi.

More than 200 families have left the area. Those still in Shaumiani gather in the local Community Centre, which people use to promote culture, education and sports. This time however, they are there to attend an information meeting with ICC representatives.

Around 25 people, mostly women, attended the ICC information session. Many are well informed about the investigation that opened in Georgia in 2016. What sparks their interest is the participation of victims in the ICC trials.
