Dr Katharine Fortin - "Accountability of Armed Groups under International Law"

Dr Fortin is an Assistant Professor of public international law and human rights at Utrecht University's Netherlands Institute of Human Rights. She defended her PhD on the accountability of armed groups under human rights law at Utrecht University in October 2015 and was awarded a cum laude. The focus of her current research is the legal framework which applies to non-international armed conflicts. In addition to her research, Dr Fortin teaches human rights law, public international law and international humanitarian law. She also regularly coaches students for the Jean Pictet and Frits Kalshoven competitions in international humanitarian law and is the founder and co-editor of the Armed Groups and International Law blog.

After several years practising as a dispute resolution solicitor at Norton Rose Fulbright in London, Dr Fortin moved to the Netherlands in 2006. In 2007, she obtained her LL.M degree (summa cum laude) in International Human Rights and Criminal Justice at Utrecht University. In 2008-9, she worked as an Associate Legal Officer in the Immediate Office of the Prosecutor at the ICTY. She has also held positions at or provided services to the International Criminal Court, the Medical Foundation for Victims of Torture, the UNHCR, the AIRE Centre and the Council of Churches in Sierra Leone.
