Prof. dr. Caroline Fournet - ‘Dignity for the victims’ – Is the Indecent Disposal of Corpses an International Crime to Investigate and Prosecute?

Prof. dr. Caroline Fournet is Associate Professor and Rosalind Franklin Fellow at the Department of Criminal Law and Criminology at the University of Groningen, where she holds a Chair in International and Comparative Criminal Law. She was previously Senior Lecturer at Exeter University's School of Law. Her main publications include three monographs: International Crimes: Theories, Practice and Evolution, with an Introduction by Professor Malcolm N. Shaw QC (Cameron May, 2006), The Crime of Destruction and the Law of Genocide: Their Impact on Collective Memory, (Ashgate, 2007) and Genocide and Crimes Against Humanity: Confusions and Amalgams in French Practice (Hart Publishing, 2013), which was awarded a British Academy Small Research Grant for its completion.

Her research focuses on comparative and international criminal law and justice.  Her current research includes investigating the legal status of mass graves and the fate of victims of international crimes after their death. She is a co-investigator on the ERC funded Research Programme Corpses of Mass Violence and Genocide. She is also the Editor for Law of the academic journal Human Remains and Violence: An Interdisciplinary Journal (MUP) as well as a member of the Editorial Board of Science and Justice, Journal of The Chartered Society of Forensic Sciences (Elsevier).
