Prof. Julia Sloth-Nielsen - “The African Committee on Children’s Rights and the impact of war upon children”

Prof. Julia Sloth-Nielsen is a Senior Professor at the University of the Western Cape, South Africa, and was appointed as a Professor in Children’s Rights and the developing world at Leiden University in 2013. She has worked extensively in children’s rights, focussing on law reform in South Africa where she was part of a team drafting the Children’s Act of 2005 and the Child Justice Act of 2008. She has also worked on law reform and implementation in many African countries including Mozambique, Kenya, South Sudan, Botswana and Lesotho. She was elected by the heads of state of the AU to the African Committee of Experts on the Rights and Welfare of the Child in January 2011 and currently serves as the 2nd vice chair. She has published more than 100 articles and book chapters on various aspects of children’s rights in the African context, and published a book on children’s legal rights in the African context in 2008.
