Strong support for the ICC and concrete recommendations to enhance cooperation, from participants at High-Level Seminar for Central and Eastern European States

The High-Level Seminar for Fostering Cooperation with the International Criminal Court ("ICC" or "the Court") aimed at countries belonging to the Central and Eastern European Group of States ended yesterday, in Bucharest, Romania. In addition to States from the region, participants at the two-day Seminar included representatives of intergovernmental and non-governmental organisations, as well as officials from the ICC.

The final day of the Seminar involved presentations and discussions at the expert-level on a number of topics. These included challenges related to voluntary cooperation in witness protection and rights of the Defence, implementing legislation and ratification of the Rome Statute, as well as the national legal frameworks and mechanisms available to provide judicial assistance to the Court. Seminar participants identified key areas for strengthening cooperation with the ICC, including comprehensive national implementation of the Rome Statute, further exchange of information and best practices in the areas of judicial assistance, as well as political support for greater awareness of the Court's mandate and promoting universality of the Statute.

The recommendations adopted highlighted the most relevant issues related to effective cooperation between the ICC and Central and Eastern European States. They reflect the continued commitment within the region to promote the work of the Court and the values enshrined in the Rome Statute.
