Statement: 22 March 2013

Prosecutor’s statement in relation to Central African Republic

I am deeply concerned about reports of the worsening situation in the Central African Republic and allegations of the commission of serious crimes in the context of the on-going conflict. I remind all parties to the conflict in CAR that ICC has jurisdiction in CAR and my Office will not hesitate to investigate and prosecute all those alleged to be committing these crimes. Those who seek to attain or retain political power by targeting civilians will be held accountable.

CAR civilians cannot continue to be subjected to these crimes. ICC mandate is to put an end to impunity for crimes of this nature by holding accountable those alleged to be responsible for these crimes. The Commission of crimes in CAR must cease forthwith.
