President of Colombia visits International Criminal Court
On 17 February 2022, H.E. Mr Iván Duque Márquez, President of the Republic of Colombia, visited the International Criminal Court (ICC), where he met the President of the Court, Judge Piotr Hofmański, the Court's First Vice President, Judge Luz del Carmen Ibáñez Carranza, Second Vice President Judge Antoine Kesia-Mbe Mindua, Prosecutor Karim A.A. Khan QC and Registrar Peter Lewis.
In his remarks at the meeting, President Hofmański thanked President Duque for honouring the Court with his visit and stated: "The commitment and full cooperation of States is essential for the ICC to be able to discharge its mandate independently and effectively. In this context, Colombia's continued support for the Court is of vital importance and much appreciated."
President Duque reiterated Colombia's commitment to the guiding principles of the Rome Statute and manifested President Piotr Hofmański and Registrar Peter Lewis his "admiration for the International Criminal Court and the work it has been carrying out, particularly in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic". He expressed his appreciation for "the efforts that the Court is doing to ensure that victims of the most heinous crimes can obtain justice, even during these difficult circumstances".
Additionally, President Duque recalled that "the Cooperation Agreement between the government of Colombia and the Office of the Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court, signed in Bogotá in October 2021, marks a milestone in the relationship between his country and the ICC", and affirmed that his encounter with Prosecutor Karim Khan was a propitious opportunity to further develop it. He highlighted that "Colombia has an enormous experience in the field of transitional justice" and stressed the importance of said agreement, as "it opens new ways to share that know-how with the ICC and its States Parties, always looking towards the compliance of the objectives of the Rome Statute".
The visit of President Duque Márquez to the ICC highlights Colombia's support to the Court and the joint efforts deployed in the fight against the impunity of the perpetrators of the most serious crimes that affect the international community as a whole.

El 17 de febrero de 2022, Su Excelencia Sr. Iván Duque Márquez, Presidente de la República de Colombia, visitó la Corte Penal Internacional (CPI) para reunirse con el Presidente de la Corte, Juez Piotr Hofmański, la Primera Vicepresidenta de la Corte, Jueza Luz del Carmen Ibáñez Carranza, el Segundo Vicepresidente, Juez Antoine Kesia-Mbe Mindua, el Fiscal Karim A.A. Khan QC y el Secretario Peter Lewis.
En sus comentarios en la reunión, el Presidente Hofmański agradeció al presidente Duque por honrar a la Corte con su visita y afirmó: "El compromiso y la plena cooperación de los Estados es esencial para que la CPI pueda cumplir con su mandato de manera independiente y efectiva. En este contexto, el apoyo continuo de Colombia a la Corte es de vital importancia y es muy apreciado."

El Presidente Iván Duque reiteró el compromiso de Colombia con los principios rectores del Estatuto de Roma y manifestó al Presidente Magistrado Piotr Hofmański y al Secretario Judicial Peter Lewis su "admiración por la Corte Penal Internacional y el trabajo que viene realizando, particularmente en el contexto de la pandemia del COVID-19". Expresó su agradecimiento por "los esfuerzos que está realizando la Corte para garantizar que las víctimas de los crímenes más atroces puedan obtener justicia, incluso en estas difíciles circunstancias".
Asimismo, el Presidente Duque recordó que "el Acuerdo de Cooperación entre el Gobierno de Colombia y la Fiscalía de la Corte Penal Internacional, suscrito en Bogotá en octubre de 2021, marca un hito en la relación de su país con la CPI", y afirmó que su encuentro con el Fiscal Karim Khan fue una oportunidad propicia para desarrollarlo más. Destacó que "Colombia tiene una enorme experiencia en el campo de la justicia transicional" y resaltó la importancia de dicho acuerdo, ya que "abre nuevas vías para compartir ese saber hacer con la CPI y sus Estados partes, siempre mirando hacia el cumplimiento de los objetivos del mismo, el Estatuto de Roma".

La visita del Presidente Duque Márquez a la CPI destaca el apoyo de Colombia hacia la Corte, y resalta los esfuerzos conjuntos en la lucha contra la impunidad de los autores de los crímenes más graves que afectan a la comunidad internacional.
