The President of the Assembly of States Parties meets with the UN Secretary-General and the President of the General Assembly
On 15 December 2017, the new President of the Assembly of States Parties, Mr. O-Gon Kwon (Republic of Korea), met with the President of the General Assembly of the United Nations, H.E. Mr. Miroslav Lajčák, and with the United Nations Secretary-General of the United Nations, H.E. Mr. António Guterres. President Kwon was accompanied by the two Vice-Presidents of the Assembly, H.E. Ambassador Momar Diop (Senegal) and H.E. Ambassador Michal Mlynár (Slovakia), who will be coordinators of The Hague and New York Working Groups of the Bureau of the Assembly, respectively, until December 2020.
During the meetings, the discussion centered on the role which the International Criminal Court plays in the system of international criminal justice, on the importance of seeking to advance universality of the Rome Statute, on the continued need for diplomatic support to the Court, as well as on the need to strengthen cooperation with the Court.
Furthermore, reference was also made to the commemoration of the twentieth anniversary of the adoption of the Rome Statute in 2018, which would constitute an opportune moment to reflect on the achievements attained and the challenges to overcome in the subsequent period.

El 15 de diciembre de 2017, el nuevo Presidente de la Asamblea de los Estados Partes, el Excmo. Sr. O-Gon Kwon (República de Corea), se reunió con el Presidente de la Asamblea General de las Naciones Unidas, el Excmo. Sr. Miroslav Lajčák y con el Secretario General de las Naciones Unidas, el Excmo. Sr. António Guterres. El Presidente Kwon estuvo acompañado por los dos Vicepresidentes de la Asamblea, S.E. el Embajador Momar Diop (Senegal) y S. E. el Embajador Michal Mlynár (Eslovaquia), quienes serán los coordinadores de los Grupos de Trabajo de la Mesa de La Haya y Nueva York, respectivamente, hasta diciembre de 2020.
Durante las reuniones, las discusiones se centraron sobre el papel que la Corte Penal Internacional desempeña en el sistema de justicia penal internacional, sobre la importancia de buscar la universalidad del Estatuto de Roma, sobre la necesidad continua de apoyo diplomático a la Corte, así como sobre la necesidad de reforzar la cooperación con la Corte.
Se hizo referencia al importante papel que Naciones Unidas desempeña al apoyar el sistema del Estatuto de Roma, incluso facilitando el llevar a cabo las sesiones de la Asamblea de Estados Partes en el Estatuto de Roma en la sede de Naciones Unidas, como la decimosexta sesión, la cual concluyó el 14 de diciembre con la histórica decisión de activar la jurisdicción de la Corte sobre el crimen de agresión.
Por otra parte, se hizo referencia a la conmemoración del vigésimo aniversario de la adopción del Estatuto de Roma en 2018, lo que constituye un oportuno momento para reflexionar sobre los logros obtenidos y los desafíos a superar en el subsiguiente período.

في 15 كانون الأول/ديسمبر 2017، ٱجتمع الرئيس الجديد لجمعية الدول الأطراف القاضي أو-غون كوون (جمهورية كوريا) برئيس الدورة الحالية للجمعية العامة السيد ميروسلاف لايتشاك والأمين العام للأمم المتحدة السيد أنطونيو غوتيريش. ورافق الرئيس كوون نائباه سعادة السفير مومر ضيوف (السنغال) وسعادة السفير ميخال ملينار (سلوفاكيا)، منسقّا مجموعتي عمل مكتب جمعية الدول الأطراف في مدينتي لاهاي ونيويورك على التوالي حتى شهر كانون الأول/ ديسمبر 2020.
وخلال الاجتماع تركزّت المناقشة على دور المحكمة الجنائية الدولية في نظام العدالة الجنائية الدولية، وأهمية السعي لتعزيز عالمية نظام روما الأساسي، فضلًا على ٱستمرار الحاجة إلى الدعم الدبلوماسي للمحكمة وإلى تعزيز التعاون مع المحكمة.
وتطرّق النقاش أيضًا إلى الدور المهم للأمم المتحدة في دعم نظام روما الأساسي، بما يشمل تيسير عقد ٱجتماعات جمعية الدول الأعضاء في مقر الأمم المتحدة، على غرار الدورة السادسة عشرة التي ٱختتمت أعمالها يوم 14 كانون الأول/ديسمبر 2017 بقرارٍ تاريخي بتفعيل اختصاص المحكمة على جريمة العدوان.
علاوة على ذلك، تناول الاجتماع حلول الذكرى العشرين لاعتماد نظام روما الأساسي في العام 2018، ما يشكل فرصة مناسبة لتسليط الضوء على الإنجازات المحققة وعلى التحديات التي يتعين التغلب عليها في الفترة اللاحقة.
