National Autonomous University of Mexico wins 10th ICC Moot Court Competition, Spanish version
Today, 7 June 2023, the National Autonomous University of Mexico won the final round of the 10th Edition of the International Criminal Court (ICC) Moot Court Competition, Spanish version, held in ICC Courtroom I in The Hague (Netherlands). On the judge's bench for this competition were ICC Vice President Judge Luz del Carmen Ibáñez Carranza, presiding judge on the competition, Judge Socorro Flores Liera and Judge Sergio Ugalde Godínez.
The University of Buenos Aires (Argentina) and the University of Nariño (Colombia) won, respectively, second and third places. The award for the Best Speaker went to Julieta Valentina Ricagno of the University of Buenos Aires (Argentina).
Members of the winning team are Diego Sánchez Acosta, Miguel Ángel Olvera Jácome, Juan Antonio Zamora and Héctor Germán Hernández Cardeña. The teams competed on a fictitious case, presenting oral arguments in the roles of the Office of the Prosecutor, the Defence and Legal Representatives of Victims, which were web-streamed live on the Court's website and Facebook page.
The 10th edition of the Spanish version of the ICC Moot Court Competition takes place as part of the annual Iberoamerican Week of International Justice and Human Rights, held in The Hague, and is organised by the Ibero-American Institute for Peace, Human Rights and International Justice (IIH), with the institutional support of the International Criminal Court. Top students of 10 universities from 6 countries (Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Spain, Mexico and Uruguay) participated in the preliminary stage of this year's ICC Moot Court Competition.
In the context of its Academic Programme, the ICC supports the organisation of ICC Moot Court Competitions in Chinese, English, French and Spanish, with a view to also support an Arabic version in the future. These initiatives play a critical role in galvanising interest in the Court's work with academic communities as well as in enhancing promotion and respect for international criminal law.

Hoy, el 7 de junio de 2023, la Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM) fue proclamada vencedora en la final del Concurso de Simulación Judicial ante la CPI, edición en español, celebrada en la Sala de Audiencias I de la Corte Penal Internacional en La Haya, Países Bajos. La ronda final tuvo lugar frente a un Tribunal compuesto por la Vicepresidenta de la CPI, la Jueza Luz del Carmen Ibáñez Carranza, jueza presidente del concurso, la Jueza Socorro Flores Liera y el Juez Sergio Ugalde Godínez.
La Universidad de Buenos Aires (UBA) (Argentina) obtuvo el segundo lugar y la Universidad de Nariño (Colombia) el tercero. Julieta Valentina Ricagno, de la Universidad de Buenos Aires (Argentina) recibió el premio de mejor oradora.
El equipo ganador está integrado por Diego Sánchez Acosta, Miguel Ángel Olvera Jácome, Juan Antonio Zamora y Héctor Germán Hernández Cardeña. Los equipos finalistas compitieron en un caso ficticio, desempeñando los roles de la Fiscalía, la Representación legal de las víctimas, y la Defensa, presentando sus argumentos orales en una audiencia transmitida en directo por la página web de la Corte, y de su cuenta de Facebook.
La décima edición del Concurso de Simulación Judicial en español se celebró en el marco de la Semana Iberoamericana de Justicia Internacional y los Derechos Humanos, y está organizada por el Instituto Iberoamericano para la Paz, los Derechos Humanos y la Justicia Internacional (IIH), con el apoyo institucional de la Corte Penal Internacional. Estudiantes de 10 universidades de 6 países diferentes (Argentina, Chile, Colombia, España, México y Uruguay) han participado en las fases preliminares de este Concurso.
Como parte de su programa académico, la Corte apoya la organización de los concursos de simulación judicial en inglés, español, francés y chino; en el futuro también espera ofrecer su respaldo a una versión en árabe. Estas iniciativas ofrecen una oportunidad única para mantener el interés de las comunidades académicas sobre la labor de la Corte, y permiten promover el conocimiento de, y el respeto por, la justicia penal internacional.
