President of the International Criminal Court meets with United Nations Officials, Representatives of States and Civil Society in New York

ICC-PIDS-20071029-261

During this week, the President of the International Criminal Court (ICC), Judge Philippe Kirsch, will meet in New York with the Secretary-General of the United Nations, senior United Nations officials, Permanent Representatives and delegations of United Nations Member States and representatives of civil society organizations. On 1 November, he will present the annual report of the ICC to the United Nations General Assembly.

In his meetings, President Kirsch is discussing the Court’s needs for support and cooperation from States, the United Nations and civil society. According to President Kirsch, "The ICC does not have its own police force or military. States and, by extension, international organizations must enforce the decisions of the Court and ensure respect for its judicial processes."

The International Criminal Court is an independent, permanent court that investigates and prosecutes persons accused of the most serious crimes of international concern: genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes. It is independent from the United Nations. A formal relationship was established between the Court through the Relationship Agreement between the Court and the United Nations, concluded on 4 October 2004.
