Libya: ICC Prosecutor to Report to the United Nations Security Council

ICC-OTP-20120515-MA123

On Wednesday May 16 in New York, International Criminal Court (ICC) Prosecutor Luis Moreno-Ocampo will brief the United Nations Security Council on the situation in Libya.

The Prosecutor will update the Council on the ongoing investigation into war crimes including allegations of rape; the case against Saif Al-Islam Gaddafi and Abdallah Al-Senussi; as well as future investigation.

This is the third report to the Council by the Prosecutor on Libya pursuant to Resolution 1970.

The ICC is an independent, permanent court that investigates and prosecutes persons accused of the most serious crimes of international concern, namely genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes if national authorities with jurisdiction are unwilling or unable to do so genuinely. The Office of the Prosecutor is currently investigating in seven situations: The Democratic Republic of Congo, Northern Uganda, the Darfur region of Sudan, Central African Republic, Kenya, Libya and Ivory Coast. The Office is also currently conducting preliminary examinations analyzing alleged crimes committed on the territory of Honduras, Republic of Korea, Afghanistan and Nigeria, as well as checking if genuine national proceedings are being carried out in Guinea, Colombia and Georgia.
