Today, on 7 October 2022, a revised version of the Code of Judicial Ethics of the International Criminal Court (ICC) enters into force.

During the Judges’ Retreat, held from 15-18 September 2022, the judges of the Court agreed to amend the Code of Judicial Ethics, in accordance with regulation 126 of the Regulations of the Court.

Building upon the pre-existing prohibition on judges engaging in any form of discrimination, harassment, including sexual harassment, and abuse of authority, the judges have agreed to specify in the Code of Judicial Ethics that the Court’s recent Administrative Instruction on Investigations of Unsatisfactory Conduct and the Administrative Instruction on Addressing Discrimination, Harassment, Including Sexual Harassment, and Abuse of Authority also apply to the judges of the Court. With this amendment to the Code of Judicial Ethics, the judges intend to enhance accountability and the application of consistent principles, procedures and obligations to all categories of persons working at the Court.

This amendment to article 5(2) of the Code of Judicial Ethics enters into force today, upon publication of the amended version of the Code on the ICC website. In revising the Court’s Code of Judicial Ethics, the judges of the Court confirm their strong commitment to the highest ethical standards.
