ICC-OTP-200708294-238

On August 28-29, International Criminal Court (ICC) Prosecutor Luis Moreno-Ocampo will join colleagues from international criminal tribunals past and present at a conference on “The law of wars: Past, Present and Future.”  The Prosecutors will issue a joint declaration.

During the conference, which will take place in Chautauqua, New York, the prosecutor will urge the world’s governments to uphold the promise of the law they established by making sure that arrest warrants issued by the ICC are enforced.

While in New York, Prosecutor Moreno-Ocampo will meet with Under Secretary General for Peacekeeping Operations, Mr Jean-Marie Guéhenno, United Nations Special Advisor to the Secretary-General for the Prevention of Genocide, Mr Francis Deng, as well as with Assistant Secretary General for Humanitarian Affairs, Ms Margareta Wahlstrom to discuss various aspects of ICC-UN cooperation, the present situations in Darfur, Uganda, the Democratic Republic of Congo, the Central African Republic and the need to execute arrest warrants.

“Continued cooperation efforts with all partners are essential to ensure that judicial decisions are implemented. Victims are entitled to both peace and justice” said Prosecutor Moreno Ocampo.  “As long as indicted individuals remain at large, victims are threatened and crimes continue” the Prosecutor added.

The International Criminal Court is an independent, permanent court that investigates and prosecutes persons accused of the most serious crimes of international concern, namely genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes.
