ICC Holds Workshop in Northern Uganda with New Local Government Leaders

ICC-CPI-20060621-141

Gulu, Northern Uganda,  16 June 2006

On 15 and 16 June 2006, the International Criminal Court invited leaders of the Local Governments affected by the conflict with LRA to an informative workshop in Gulu. The aim of the workshop was to provide information about the ICC and listen to concerns expressed by local government leaders.

The participants included 5 representatives from 11 Districts: Gulu, Kitgum, Adjumani, Pader, Lira, Apac, Kaberamaido, Amuria, Amolatar, Katakwi and Soroti.

During the workshop ICC staff provided information and materials on the ICC and its investigation in Northern Uganda as well as information on how victims can participate in Court proceedings.

The district leaders agreed on the need to disseminate information and sensitize the population on the International Criminal Court. The leaders drafted outreach workplans and issued an inter-district resolution to create a forum to coordinate public information and outreach activities on the ICC. The inter-district forum would also facilitate cooperation and communication between the ICC and the affected districts.

The district leaders also agreed to work together to address problems  affecting the region and to support any effort to resolve the conflicts.
