ICC to hold Seventh Seminar of Counsel on 11-12 May 2009

ICC-CPI-20090507-MA39

The International Criminal Court (ICC) will hold its seventh Seminar of Counsel at the World Forum Convention Center in The Hague on 11-12 May 2009. The aim of the annual event is to continue to promote the existing constructive dialogue between the international legal profession and the Court. It allows the ICC to provide an update on its judicial work and offer an opportunity for law professionals to informally consult each on issues of common interest.

During the two-day seminar, members of the ICC’s List of Counsel, representatives from legal associations, non-governmental organisations and ad hoc tribunals will discuss key subjects such us the Court’s Legal Aid reports, which touch on indigence criteria and determination, legal aid for victims representation, as well as disclosure issues in proceedings before the Court. Updates on victims and defence matters will be provided by the Registry’s Victim Participation and Reparations Section, the Defence Support Section, and the Offices of Public Counsel for Victims and Defence.

A three-day training course for members of the Court’s List of Counsel has been scheduled to follow on from the seminar, on 13 - 15 May 2009. The training will take place at the seat of the Court at the Haagse Veste building situated on Saturnusstraat 2 - 3. Its main objective will be to familiarise counsels with the administrative, technical and judicial structures of the Court and to provide them with the practical skills necessary for them to effectively perform before the Court once they have been appointed.
