Deputy Prosecutor of the ICC to meet UN Deputy Secretary General and President of UN Security Council

ICC-OTP-PR-20070817-235

International Criminal Court (ICC) Deputy Prosecutor Mrs. Fatou Bensouda is in New York today meeting with the Deputy Secretary General of the United Nations, Dr Asha-Rose Migiro, and with Ambassador Pascal Gayama, Deputy Permanent Representative of the Congo to the UN and President of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) for the month of August.

Mrs. Bensouda is providing an update on the work of the Court, particularly on cooperation with the United Nations, other international organizations, States and others.  She is focusing on recent developments on the situations under investigation, namely DRC, Uganda, Darfur and the Central African Republic, and the need to enforce the Court’s decisions.

"Continued cooperation is crucial to implementing the Court’s outstanding arrest warrants’’ said Mrs. Bensouda.

On 27 April, ICC judges issued arrest warrants for Sudanese Minister of State for Humanitarian Affairs, Ahmad Harun, and militia/Janjaweed leader Ali Kushayb, for 51 counts of crimes against humanity and war crimes in Darfur. There are also outstanding arrest warrants for four leaders of the Lords Resistance Army in Northern Uganda.

The International Criminal Court (ICC) is an independent, permanent court that investigates and prosecutes persons accused of the most serious crimes of international concern, namely genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes.
