Delegation from Uganda holds talks with the Registrar of the ICC

ICC-CPI-20050318-94

On 16 March 2005, the Registrar of the International Criminal Court, Mr. Bruno Cathala, held talks with leaders of the Acholi community in northern Uganda, at the start of their visit to the ICC, made at the invitation of the Chief Prosecutor, Luis Moreno-Ocampo.

The Acholi delegation was led by Rwot David Onen Acana II and included Archbishop John Baptist Odama, Bishop Onono-Onweng, Hon. Jane Akwero Odwong (MP Kitgum), Col. Walter Ochora and Hon. Jacob Oulanyah ( MP Omoro County).

Also present at the meeting were Mr Didier Preira, Head of the Division of the Victims and Counsels and Ms Fiona McKay, Chief of Victims Participation and Reparations Section.

The Rome Statute provides that the Registrar is responsible for supporting the protection of victims and witnesses, and all matters related to victims’ participation in proceedings and reparations for victims. The Registry is also responsible for the public information and outreach activities of the Court.

During their talks, the Registrar and the visiting delegation exchanged views on matters of mutual concern in regard to the interests of victims and justice, building on previous discussions in Uganda between officials of the Court’s Victim sections and the local communities in northern Uganda. Strategies for communicating information about the Court to the communities in northern Uganda were also discussed.

The Registrar very much appreciated the views and suggestions from the Acholi leaders and agreed with them to maintain a constructive dialogue.
