ICC and National University of Mongolia sign Memorandum of Understanding

On 8 March 2024, the Registrar of the International Criminal Court ("ICC" or the "Court"), Mr Osvaldo Zavala Giler, and Mr Luvsanvandan Bold, Ambassador of Mongolia to Belgium, the Netherlands, and Luxembourg and Head of European Union Missiononbehalf of Dean School of Law of of Mongolian National University ("NUM School of Law") signed a Memorandum of Understanding ("MoU") to strengthen cooperation and geographical representation.

The ceremony took place in the presence of ICC President Piotr Hofmański and Chief Justice Damdin Ganzorig of the Supreme Court of Mongolia, marking a pivotal moment in the ICC's ongoing endeavor to ensure equitable geographical representation of its professional staff, particularly from under-represented and non-represented State Parties, with a focus on the Asia-Pacific region.

Registrar Osvaldo Zavala Giler emphasized that "The Court is committed to fostering stronger partnerships with States Parties from the Asia-Pacific region, and I am deeply grateful for Mongolia's proactive engagement, which has significantly contributed to our shared goals." He added that "the signing of the MoU marks a significant step towards enhancing geographical representation and fostering collaboration between the ICC and Mongolia's academia". 

Ambassador Luvsanvandan Bold underscored the importance of the occasion, emphasizing that it signifies the strengthened partnership between the ICC and Mongolia. He highlighted the University's potential to enrich the work of the Court through collaborative projects, bringing invaluable knowledge and expertise.

With the signing of the MoU, the ICC formally establishes a cooperation framework with NUM School of Law. This framework aims to foster greater awareness and expertise in the mandate and activities of the ICC, facilitating the exchange of knowledge, experience, and expertise through participation in the ICC's internship and visiting professional programs.
