France supports Francophone trainings on the ICC

On 3 December 2012, the Ambassador of France to the Netherlands, Mr Pierre Ménat, and the Registrar of the International Criminal Court (ICC), Ms Silvana Arbia, concluded a memorandum of understanding formalizing a EUR 20,000 contribution of the French Government for the organisation of a Francophone training seminar on international justice for the Southeast Asia and Pacific Region in the first quarter of 2013.

This training on international criminal justice – and the ICC in particular – for Francophone representatives of government, of the legal profession and of civil society from the region is part of a series of seminars organised with the support of the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the International Organisation of La Francophonie (IOF).

From 2009 to 2011, three high-level training seminars were held in French in Dakar (Senegal) for representatives of countries of West Africa, in Yaoundé (Cameroon) for representatives from Francophone countries of Central Africa, and in Tunis (Tunisia) for representatives of Maghreb and Middle East countries. These meetings aim at improving the knowledge of participants about the ICC and at promoting cooperation between national law professionals and the Court in the fight against impunity for the most serious crimes.

The ICC is the first permanent, treaty-based, international criminal court established to help end impunity for the perpetrators of the most serious crimes of concern to the international community, namely war crimes, crimes against humanity, and genocide.
