Peter Lewis elected as ICC Registrar

On 28 March 2018, sitting in a plenary session, judges of the International Criminal Court (ICC) elected Mr. Peter Lewis as Registrar for a period of five years by an absolute majority by secret ballot. Mr. Peter Lewis succeeds Mr. Herman von Hebel, whose current five-year mandate ends on 16 April 2018.

Mr. Peter Lewis is a national of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland with ten years' experience as the Chief Executive of the Crown Prosecution Service in England and Wales. He has served as Chairperson of the Criminal Justice Efficiency Board, working in partnership with senior judiciary and other criminal justice interlocutors. He has previously worked in a number of capacities including as Director of Business Development at the Crown Prosecution Service, as Chief Crown Prosecutor, Crown Prosecutor and as a Prosecuting Solicitor. He is the author of numerous publications, including in the field of international criminal justice.

In accordance with the Rome Statute, the Registrar is the principal administrative officer of the Court, who exercises his or her functions under the authority of the ICC President (article 43(2)).  The Registrar is responsible for the non-judicial aspects of the administration and servicing of the Court, without prejudice to the functions and powers of the ICC Prosecutor, whose office acts independently as a separate organ of the Court (articles 42(1) and 43(1)).
