Osvaldo Zavala Giler

The Registrar

On 10 February 2023, the judges of the International Criminal Court (ICC or the Court) elected Osvaldo Zavala Giler as Registrar. Mr Zavala Giler assumed office on 17 April 2023 for a five year mandate.
 
Mr Zavala Giler is the first former ICC staff member to assume this function, as well as the first national of a Latin American nation to do so. 
 
Before being elected Registrar, Mr Zavala Giler worked at the Court since 2010 in different capacities; he served as Chief of the Budget Section (2022-2023), Senior Special Assistant to the Registrar (2016-2022), Head of Office of the Court’s Liaison Office to the United Nations in New York (2018-2019) and Special Assistant to the Registrar (2010-2016). Mr Zavala Giler is also one of the founding members of ICCQ, the Sexual and Gender Diversity Network at the Court. 
 
Prior to joining the Court, Mr Zavala Giler worked as a Legal Officer, Legal Adviser and Liaison Officer to the United Nations for the Coalition for the International Criminal Court (CICC), from 2006 to 2010, both in New York and in The Hague. He also worked in a law firm in Ecuador from 2000 to 2003, including on cases before the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights.
 
Mr Zavala Giler graduated as a lawyer from the Universidad Católica de Santiago de Guayaquil, Ecuador, and is a licenced member of the Foro de Abogados of Ecuador. He also holds a Bachelor degree in Social and Political Science from the same University.
