Initial appearance of Ali Kushayb scheduled for 15 June 2020: Practical information

The initial appearance of Ali Muhammad Ali Abd–Al-Rahman ("Ali Kushayb") is scheduled for Monday 15 June 2020, at 11:00 (The Hague local time) in Courtroom III of the International Criminal Court ("ICC" or "Court") before the single judge Rosario Salvatore Aitala. Mr Ali Kushayb was transferred to the ICC's custody on 9 June 2020, after surrendering himself voluntarily in the Central African Republic, for war crimes and crimes against humanity allegedly committed in Darfur (Sudan).

During the initial appearance hearing, the single judge will verify the identity of the suspect and the language in which he is able to follow the proceedings. He will be informed of the charges against him. Mr Ali Kushayb will be represented by Cyril Laucci as Duty Counsel.

Background: The first warrant of arrest delivered on 27 April 2007 against Ali Kushayb lists 50 counts on the basis of his individual criminal responsibility for war crimes and crimes against humanity. On 11 June 2020, Pre-Trial Chamber II reclassified as public, with redactions, a second warrant of arrest against Mr Ali Kushayb adding three new charges of war crimes (murder) and crimes against humanity (murder and other inhumane acts) allegedly committed in Deleig and surrounding areas between on or about 5 to 7 March 2004.
