Prof. Timothy McCormack: "Australia's national implementation of international criminal law and the use of article 1(F) of the Refugee Convention"

Professor Tim McCormack is currently the Foundation Australian Red Cross Professor of International Humanitarian Law at the Melbourne Law School and the Foundation Director of the Asia Pacific Centre for Military Law – a collaborative initiative (established 2001) between the Melbourne Law School and The Australian Defence Force Legal Service. He was also recently appointed honorary Adjunct Professor of Law at the University of Tasmania Law School. Previously, Prof. McCormack acted as amicus curiae on international law matters before the ICTY for the trial of Slobodan Miloševic (2002 – 2006) and provided expert IHL advice for the Defence before the US Military Commission in Guántanamo Bay (2003 – 2007). Prof McCormack was a National Vice-President of Australian Red Cross (1999-2002) and chaired the Australian Red Cross National Advisory Committee on IHL (1994-2002). He is also a general co-editor of the International Humanitarian Law Series (Leiden); editor-in-chief of the Yearbook on International Humanitarian Law (Asser Institute) and is a member of the editorial board of several other leading international academic journals. Additionally, Prof. McCormack co-edited and contributed to numerous books including The Legacy of Nuremberg: Civilising Influence or Institutionalised Vengeance? (2008); A Century of War and Peace:  Asia-Pacific Perspectives on the Centenary of the 1899 Hague Peace Conference (2001); The Changing Face of Conflict and the Efficacy of International Humanitarian Law (1999); The Law of War Crimes:  National and International Approaches (1997) and Self-Defence in International Law:  The Israeli Raid on the Iraqi Nuclear Reactor (1996). ). Prof McCormack holds an LLB (Hons) from the University of Tasmania (Aus) and a Ph.D from Monash University (Aus).
