Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court (ICC) Karim A.A. Khan KC presents the Annual Report of the Office of the Prosecutor

Today my Office has launched its first Annual Report, “Towards a More Just World: Every Day”. The publication of this Report underlines my commitment to increase the transparency of the work of my Office and deepen engagement with all stakeholders who may read it, whether impacted communities, State authorities, civil society, international organisations, or our international and regional partners.

Through the Annual Report we aim to share our progress, the challenges we have faced, and our strategy moving forward in delivering on our priorities. As part of this reflective exercise, we have considered the initiatives and events that took place from the beginning of my mandate up to the end of November 2022.

It is my hope that through this publication we can highlight the steps taken towards the execution of our mandate and the realisation of organisational and cultural change we have begun to build. While not exhaustive, the Annual Report covers a wide range of topics from our work to bring a greater field-based focus to our activities, through reorganisation of the Office, and our attempt to bring greater dynamism to our approach to complementarity.

I am aware we cannot work in a vacuum in implementing this vision of positive change. As I have stated in different fora, deepening the conversation with survivors, civil society, national authorities, indeed all partners, is a key priority for my Office. The ICC should not be an apex Court but a hub for cooperation and engagement, and my Office intends to play its part in rendering this a meaningful reality.

This is the first time my Office is publishing a Report of this type.  I am sure that there are some elements that can be improved further looking to next year. But it is an honest attempt to increase the interface with all our partners so that we can deliver together. We look forward to your thoughts as to how it can be further enhanced.

The hard work of all of those in my Office over the past 18 months brings me hope and optimism.  However, I am also aware that there is so much more we can and need to do so as to meet the legitimate demands of survivors and the families of victims. We will continue to build on the steps taken over the course of the last year and a half in order to reach our common goal of ensuring there is no impunity for international crimes.  We should assess our impact based on whether we make a real difference in the lives of those who believe in and rely on us.

We stand ready to continue to unfailingly and impartially serve the mandate entrusted to us with dedication, integrity, and respect – every day.
