Alleged member of Ansar Eddine and de facto chief of Islamic police. Alleged to have been involved in the work of the Islamic court in Timbuktu.

Charges: Suspected of crimes against humanity allegedly committed in Timbuktu, Mali, in the context of a widespread and systematic attack by armed groups Ansar Eddine / Al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb against the civilian population of Timbuktu and its region, between 1 April 2012 and 28 January 2013: Torture, rape, sexual slavery, other inhumane acts, including, inter alia, forced marriages, persecution; and of war crimes allegedly committed in Timbuktu, Mali, in the context of an armed conflict not of an international nature occurring in the same period between April 2012 and January 2013: Torture, cruel treatment, outrages upon personal dignity, passing of sentences without previous judgement pronounced by a regularly constituted court affording all judicial guarantees which are generally recognized as indispensable, intentionally directing attacks against buildings dedicated to religion and historic monuments, rape and sexual slavery.

Alleged member of Ansar Eddine, a movement associated with Al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb, head of the "Hisbah" until September 2012, and associated with the work of the Islamic Court of Timbuktu. Arrest warrant: 28 September 2015.

Charges: Found guilty as a co-perpetrator of the war crime consisting in intentionally directing attacks against religious and historic buildings in Timbuktu, Mali, in June and July 2012. Sentenced to nine years' imprisonment, the time spent by the suspect in detention being deducted from the sentence.

Found guilty and sentenced to 9 years imprisonment on 27 September 2016. On 25 November 2021, Mr Al Mahdi's imprisonment sentence was reduced by two years. The date for the sentence's completion is set to 18 September 2022. Reparations Order for victims pronounced by judges and is final.
