Judge Baltasar Garzon requested to be a consultant for the Office of the Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court

The Office of the Prosecutor (OTP) of the International Criminal Court today confirmed that it has requested Judge Baltasar Garzon of Spain, to work as a consultant for seven months, helping the office improve its investigative methods.

“Judge Garzon’s extensive experience in investigating massive crimes committed by States and non state organisations will be a great contribution to my office.” Prosecutor Moreno-Ocampo said.

Mr. Garzon has already assisted the OTP in relation to the preliminary examination the Office is carrying out in Colombia.

In addition to having high level consultants, the OTP also has a Legal Advisory Board which includes Professor Catharine A. MacKinnon of the University of Michigan Law School, who was appointed Special Adviser on Gender Crimes in November 2008; Professor Juan Méndez of the American University Washington College of Law, who since June 2009 has been Special Adviser on Crime Prevention; Professor Tim McCormack of the Melbourne Law School who in March 2010 was appointed as Special Advisor on International Humanitarian Law; and Professor Jose Alvarez of New York University who in April 2010 was appointed Special Advisor on International Law. Additionally in November 2009, Benjamin Ferencz was appointed Special Counsel to the Office of the Prosecutor and honorary member of the OTP’s advisory council. The Rome Statute mandates the Prosecutor to appoint advisers with legal expertise on specific issues, and they work on a pro bono basis.

The International Criminal Court is an independent, permanent court that investigates and prosecutes persons accused of the most serious crimes of international concern, namely genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes.
