University of Buenos Aires (Argentina) wins VI ICC Moot Court Competition, Spanish version
Today, 1 June 2018, the University of Buenos Aires (Argentina) won the final round of the VI Edition of the International Criminal Court (ICC) Moot Court Competition, Spanish version, held in ICC Courtroom I in The Hague (Netherlands). The Alberto Hurtado University (Chile) and the University of Chile (Chile) won, respectively, second and third places. The award for the Best Speaker went to Matías Dutra Cetusic from the Alberto Hurtado University (Chile).
Members of the winning team are Noelia Verónica Matalone, Agustina Becerra Vazquez, Florencia Natalia Leguiza, Gonzalo Guerrero, Marianela Ginette Lotito and Desiré Sara Salomón. Today's final round took place before a bench composed of ICC Judge Olga Herrera Carbuccia, presiding, and ICC legal officers Cynthia Chamberlain and Alejandro Kiss. The teams competed on a fictitious case, presenting oral arguments in the roles of the Office of the Prosecutor, Defence and Legal Representatives of Victims, which were web-streamed live on the Court's official website. After a break for deliberations, the bench announced their decision and an awards ceremony was held for all participants.
Eighteen teams from Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Mexico, Spain and Venezuela participated in this year's simulation exercise on the applicable law and jurisprudence of the ICC, of which 9 teams participated in the semi-finals during the Iberoamerican Week of International Justice in The Hague.
The sixth edition of the Spanish version of the ICC Moot Court Competition is organised by the Ibero-American Institute for Peace, Human Rights and International Justice (IIH), with the institutional support of the International Criminal Court, and in the context of the VIII Ibero-American Week of International Justice held in The Hague from 28 May to 8 June 2018.
In the context of its Academic Programme, the ICC supports the organisation of ICC Moot Court Competitions in Chinese, English, Russian and Spanish, with a view to also support Arabic and French versions in the future. These initiatives play a critical role in galvanising interest in the Court's work with academic communities as well as in enhancing promotion and respect for international criminal law.

Hoy, 1 de junio de 2018, la Universidad de Buenos Aires (Argentina) fue proclamada vencedora en la final del Concurso CPI de Simulación Judicial, edición en español, celebrada en la Sala de Audiencias I de la Corte Penal Internacional en La Haya, Países Bajos. La Universidad Alberto Hurtado (Chile) obtuvo el segundo lugar y la Universidad de Chile (Chile), el tercero. Matías Dutra Cetusic de la Universidad Alberto Hurtado (Chile) recibió el premio de mejor orador. El equipo ganador está integrado por Noelia Verónica Matalone, Agustina Becerra Vazquez, Florencia Natalia Leguiza, Gonzalo Guerrero, Marianela Ginette Lotito y Desiré Sara Salomón.
La ronda final tuvo lugar frente a un Tribunal compuesto por la jueza Olga Herrera Carbuccia, jueza presidente, y los juristas de la CPI Cynthia Chamberlain y Alejandro Kiss. Los equipos finalistas compitieron en un caso ficticio, presentando sus argumentos orales en una audiencia transmitida en directo por el portal oficial de la Corte, en internet, desempeñando los roles de la Fiscalía, la Representación legal de las víctimas, y la Defensa. Tras un receso para deliberar, el Tribunal anunció su decisión. A continuación tuvo lugar la ceremonia de premiación con asistencia de todos los equipos competidores en el certamen.
Este año, dieciocho equipos de Argentina, Chile, Costa Rica, Colombia, México, España y Venezuela participaron en este ejercicio simulado sobre la ley y la jurisprudencia aplicada en la CPI y nueve de ellos disputaron las semifinales que se celebraron en el marco de la Semana Iberoamericana en La Haya.
La sexta edición del Concurso CPI de Simulación Judicial en español está organizada por el Instituto Iberoamericano para la Paz, los Derechos Humanos y la Justicia Internacional (IIH), con el apoyo institucional de la Corte Penal Internacional. En esta oportunidad se celebró en el marco de la Octava edición de la Semana Iberoamericana de Justicia Internacional y los Derechos Humanos, que tiene lugar en La Haya del 28 de mayo al 8 de junio del 2018.
Como parte de su programa académico, la Corte Penal Internacional apoya la organización de los concursos de simulación judicial en inglés, español, ruso y chino; en un futuro ofrecerá también su respaldo a las versiones en árabe y francés. Estas iniciativas ofrecen una oportunidad única para mantener el interés de las comunidades académicas sobre la labor de la Corte, y permiten promover el conocimiento de, y el respeto por, la justicia penal internacional.
