ICC President meets with His Holiness Pope Francis at the Vatican
The President of the International Criminal Court (ICC), Judge Silvia Fernández de Gurmendi, was received by His Holiness Pope Francis at the Vatican on Friday 15 September 2017. Board member of the Trust Fund for Victims (TFV), Felipe Michelini, joined the delegation on the visit to the Vatican.
President Fernández briefed His Holiness on the Court's achievements and challenges in fighting impunity for genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes. She underlined that that the Court´s mandate is not only intended to bring perpetrators of these crimes before justice but also seeks to ensure a voice to victims in the proceedings as well as an opportunity for them to seek reparation for the harm suffered.

President Fernández thanked Pope Francis for his leadership to support peace, development and the protection of those most vulnerable, goals to which the Court also sought to contribute through its justice efforts. She explained that the Court has come far during 15 years of operations, with investigations in nine countries and several cases finished or on trial for crimes such as the recruitment of child soldiers, sexual violence in conflict, attacks against the civilian population and the destruction of cultural and religious property. She also referred to the thousands of victims participating in proceedings or seeking reparation, and hundreds of thousands of people having benefitted from psychological and medical rehabilitation and socio-economic projects developed by the TFV in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Uganda.

At the same time President Fernández referred to the current challenges to global values and stressed that enhancing the universality of the Rome Statute – the founding treaty of the Court – was essential to consolidate the Court and strengthen its capacity to address all crimes and protect all victims in an equal manner. She recognised the contributions of the Holy See to the creation of the Court as well as the support of the Catholic Church for its activities as well as those of TFV, and encouraged the Holy See to consider becoming a party to the Rome Statute in order to assist in fostering the universality of the system.

La Presidenta de la Corte Penal Internacional (CPI), la Magistrada Silvia Fernández de Gurmendi, fue recibida por Su Santidad el Papa Francisco en el Vaticano el viernes 15 de septiembre de 2017. Felipe Michelini, miembro del Fondo Fiduciario en beneficio de las víctimas acompañó a la delegación en la visita oficial al Vaticano.
La Presidenta Fernández informó a Su Santidad sobre los logros y desafíos de la Corte en la lucha contra la impunidad por genocidio, crímenes de lesa humanidad y crímenes de guerra. Subrayó que el mandato de la Corte no sólo tiene por objetivo llevar a los autores de estos crímenes ante la justicia, sino que también busca asegurar que las víctimas tengan voz en los procedimientos así como, la oportunidad de solicitar reparación por el daño sufrido.

La Presidenta Fernández agradeció al Papa Francisco su liderazgo en apoyo a la paz, el desarrollo y la protección de los más vulnerables, objetivos a los cuales la Corte también busca contribuir a través de sus esfuerzos de justicia. Explicó que la Corte ha llegado muy lejos durante sus 15 años de operaciones y tiene investigaciones en nueve países, varios casos concluidos y otros en juicio por delitos como reclutamiento de niños soldados, violencia sexual durante un conflicto armado, ataques contra la población civil y destrucción de patrimonio cultural y religioso. Asimismo, la Magistrada se refirió a las miles de víctimas que participan en los procedimientos o solicitan reparación así como cientos de miles de personas que se han beneficiado de rehabilitación médica y psicológica además de proyectos socioeconómicos desarrollados por el Fondo Fiduciario en la República Democrática del Congo y Uganda.

Al mismo tiempo, la Presidenta Fernández se refirió a los desafíos actuales relativos a los valores globales y subrayó que el fortalecimiento de la universalidad del Estatuto de Roma -el tratado fundador de la Corte- es esencial para consolidar la CPI y reforzar su capacidad para abordar todos los crímenes y proteger a todas las víctimas de igual manera. La Magistrada también reconoció las contribuciones de la Santa Sede en el proceso de creación de la Corte, así como el apoyo de la Iglesia Católica en sus actividades y las del Fondo Fiduciario al tiempo que alentó a la Santa Sede a considerar la posibilidad de ser parte en el Estatuto de Roma para ayudar a fomentar la universalidad del sistema.
