Reaffirming Spain’s support, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation visits the ICC
Today, 30 January 2017, Spain's Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, H.E. Alfonso María Dastis, visited the seat of the International Criminal Court (ICC) in The Hague, the Netherlands.
The Minister met with ICC President Judge Silvia Fernández de Gurmendi, Deputy Prosecutor James Stewart and Registrar Herman von Hebel. During the meeting, the Minister expressed the commitment of Spain towards the ICC and reaffirmed Spain's support and cooperation in the framework of the Rome Statute.
The ICC President thanked the Minister for Spain's strong support and briefed him on the current work of the Court, underlining that 2016 had been a very productive year with three judgements involving seven accused and several landmark developments such as the first conviction for destruction of cultural property. She expressed the Court's strong commitment to tackle challenges related to efficiency and effectiveness as well as the universality of the Rome Statute, emphasising that the active support of all States Parties is essential in this regard.
Spain became a State Party to the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court on 24 October 2000 when it ratified the treaty.

The International Criminal Court is the first permanent, treaty-based, international criminal court established to help end impunity for the perpetrators of the most serious crimes of concern to the international community, namely the crimes of genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes, and thus also contributes to the prevention of such crimes.

Hoy, 30 de enero de 2017, el Ministro de Relaciones Exteriores y Cooperación de España, Su Excelencia Alfonso María Dastis, visitó la sede de la Corte Penal Internacional (CPI) en La Haya, Países Bajos.
El Ministro se reunió con la Presidenta de la CPI Jueza Silvia Fernández de Gurmendi, el Fiscal Adjunto James Stewart, y el Secretario Herman von Hebel. Durante este encuentro, el Ministro expresó el compromiso de España con la Corte Penal Internacional y reafirmó el apoyo y la cooperación de España en el marco del Estatuto de Roma.
La Presidenta de la CPI agradeció al Ministro por el fuerte apoyo mostrado por España y lo informó sobre el trabajo actual de la Corte, destacando que el año 2016 había sido un año muy productivo ya que este trajo consigo tres sentencias las cuales contaron con siete acusados y varios hechos prominentes como lo es la primera sentencia por destrucción de patrimonio cultural. La Presidenta expresó el compromiso sólido de la Corte para afrontar los desafíos con respecto a eficiencia y eficacia como también con relación a la universalidad del Estatuto de Roma, enfatizando que el constante apoyo de los Estados Partes es esencial en esta coyuntura.
España se convirtió en Estado Parte del Estatuto de Roma de la Corte Penal Internacional el 24 de octubre de 2000, fecha en que ratificó el tratado.

La Corte Penal Internacional es la primera corte penal internacional permanente, basada en un tratado, establecida para contribuir a poner fin a la impunidad de los autores de los crímenes más severos que afectan a la comunidad internacional, como los son: crímenes de genocidio, crímenes de lesa humanidad y crímenes de guerra, contribuyendo simultáneamente a la prevención de estos crímenes.
