On 6 November 2015, the Registrar of the International Criminal Court (ICC), Mr Herman von Hebel, was the Honorary Guest Speaker at the seminar “ICC: Present and Future”, which took place in Târgu Mureş, Romania. The seminar was followed by a workshop with the theme “The BPI-ICB role in ensuring defence at the ICC”, both organised by the BPI-ICB in collaboration with the Faculty of Economics, Law and Administrative Sciences of Petru Maior University in Tîrgu-Mureş.

Panel members were the Honorary President of BPI-ICB, Mr Luis del Castillo, Co-Presidents Mrs Roxanne Helme QC and Mr David Levy, the General Secretary, Mr Philippe Currat, and Mr Herman von Hebel; among participants at the event were other BPI-ICB members, lawyers, professors and law students. The Registrar gave his opening remarks addressing the Court’s accomplishments and challenges, the lessons learned, and how the Court can build on its experience to move forward as an even stronger institution. During the discussions on defence at the ICC, Counsel present expressed strong support for the establishment of an Association for Counsel practicing before the Court. The aim is to ensure the quality of the Counsel, equality of arms during the trials and, as a result, the credibility of the ICC as an institution with a challenging mandate.
