The International Criminal Court began conducting a mass outreach programme in IDP camps starting with open air meetings in two Camps, in Kaberamaido district, Teso region. The camps, Abalang and Otuboi, are home to over 35,000 internal displaced persons.

The meeting, in Abalang camp, was attended by about 1, 500 persons and was conducted in cooperation with the camp leadership who introduced the Court’s outreach team. An explanation and update of the role of the ICC with regard to the situation in Northern Uganda was provided to the community after which questions raised by the participants were answered. The meeting was conducted in English, Luo and Ateso. During the meeting, a local drama group enacted a play that elaborated the suffering that the community had experienced during LRA incursions to their area

Participants requested the outreach team to organise a new meeting to further explain the rights of victims before the Court. The Court outreach team is planning to expand its IDP camp outreach programme to other camps in the affected areas.
