Errol Mendes is a Professor of Law at the University of Ottawa and currently a Visiting Professional with the OTP whilst on sabbatical. Born in Kenya, Professor Mendes holds a Bachelor of Law from the University of Exeter (UK); a Masters degree from the University of Illinois and was called to the Bar of Ontario in 1986. Since becoming a Professor in 1979, Prof. Mendes has taught at the Law faculties of the University of Alberta, the University of Western Ontario and as a visiting Professor at the Faculty of Law, McGill University and the Université de Montréal. Prof. Mendes has been a Project Leader for conflict resolution, governance and justice projects in China, Thailand, Indonesia, Brazil, El Salvador, Sri Lanka and India.
He was appointed as a member of the Canadian Human Rights Tribunal Panel and has extensive experience as a Human Rights Adjudicator under the Ontario Human Rights Code. Prof. Mendes is also a member of the Canadian Panel of Arbitrators under the auspices of the International Chamber of Commerce’s Court of Arbitration; was invited to be an advisor on the Global Compact initiative of the Secretary General and as a Senior Advisor in the Privy Council Office of the Government of Canada. In 2006, he was awarded the Walter S. Tarnopolsky Human Rights Award by the Canadian Section of the International Commission of Jurists and the Canadian Bar Association for his human rights work in Canada and across the world. He is editor-in-chief of The National Journal of Constitutional Law; and author or co-editor of five books, namely The Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms (3rd ed)(1996); Towards a Fair Global Labour market: Avoiding the New Slave Trade (1999); Democratic Policing and Accountability: Global Perspectives; Between Crime and War, Terrorism, Democracy and the Constitution, (2003) and Global Governance, Economy and Law (2003).
