Workshop for Uganda’s Police Officers

ICC-CPI-071707-232

Seventy officers from the Uganda Police Force have participated in a one-day informational workshop on the International Criminal Court held today in Kampala. It was attended by district police commanders from the Kampala Extra region, criminal investigators, trainers, as well as legal, community affairs and public relations officers. Some officials from Interpol Kampala also attended.

The workshop, organised in collaboration with the Uganda Coalition for the International Criminal Court (UCICC), was meant to broaden understanding of the ICC within the Uganda Police Force.

Court officials from the Registry and the Office of the Prosecutor made presentations on the ICC’s mandate and activities in Uganda, judicial phases and how victims could participate in its proceedings.

Participants had the opportunity to ask questions and share their concerns about Court’s activities. They committed themselves to sharing information about the Court and the international justice system through existing programmes within the Police.

In her closing remarks, the Commissioner of Police in-Charge Non-Human Resource, Ms. Elizabeth Muwanga, on behalf of the Inspector General of Police, encouraged the ICC to organise a similar workshop for their colleagues working in Northern Uganda.

The workshop was held on the occasion of the International Day of Justice, marking a new anniversary of the adoption, in Rome, in 1998, of the Statute that governs the Court. The Statute entered into force on 1 July 2002. Within its five years of existence, the ICC, based in The Hague, the Netherlands, is conducting investigations of crimes committed in Northern Uganda, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Sudan and in Central African Republic. The Chambers issued eight warrants of arrest and confirmed charges in one case.
