The Hague diplomatic community commemorates the Day of International Criminal Justice
On 12 July 2017, an event commemorating the Day of International Criminal Justice was held at the seat of the International Criminal Court in The Hague (Netherlands).
The event was attended by members of the Diplomatic Community in The Hague, officials of the ICC and other international tribunals and representatives of regional organizations and civil society.
The President of the International Criminal Court, H. E. Judge Silvia Fernández de Gurmendi delivered the keynote address. "The ICC, being a global court, needs to sufficiently embrace legal diversity. No legal system alone can adequately meet the needs of an international court facing mass crimes committed in contexts of violence. Also, we must acknowledge that there are different roads to achieve fairness.", President Fernández de Gurmendi stated.
The Vice-President of the Assembly of States Parties, H.E. Ambassador Sergio Ugalde (Costa Rica), convened a panel discussion of representatives of the Office of the Prosecutor of the ICC, the ICC Bar Association and the Open Society Justice Initiative on "Fair trial at the International Criminal Court in a confluence of legal traditions".
The panel, which has chaired by H.E. Ambassador Paul Wilke, Permanent Representative of the Netherlands to the ICC, explored the nature of the International Criminal Court’s legal system and how the fairness of trials before the Court is ensured within this hybrid system.
In his closing address, the Vice-President of the Assembly of States Parties, H.E. Ambassador Sergio Ugalde (Costa Rica) stated "We all agree that the object and purpose of the system of international criminal justice that we created is to provide a meaningful measure of redress to the victims. This meaningful measure implies a committed and resolute fight against impunity, regardless of how powerful an individual or group of individuals may be."
The event was organized with the support of the governments of Bolivia, Chile and Colombia.

El 12 de julio de 2017 se celebró un evento conmemorando el Día de la Justicia Penal Internacional en la sede de la Corte Penal Internacional en La Haya (Países Bajos).
A dicho evento asistieron los miembros de la comunidad diplomática en La Haya, funcionarios de la Corte Penal Internacional y de otros tribunales internacionales, y representantes de organizaciones regionales y de la sociedad civil.
La Presidenta de la Corte Penal Internacional, la Excma. Sra. Silvia Fernández de Gurmendi, pronunció el discurso principal, en el que subrayó que: "como instancia judicial de alcance mundial, la Corte Penal Internacional debe poder acoger la diversidad jurídica. Ningún sistema jurídico puede satisfacer, por sí solo, las necesidades de un tribunal internacional llamado a juzgar crímenes masivos cometidos en contextos de violencia. Asimismo, es preciso reconocer que existen diferentes medios para lograr un juicio justo."
El Vicepresidente de la Asamblea de los Estados Partes, Su Excelencia el Embajador Sergio Ugalde (Costa Rica), convocó un panel sobre el tema: "El juicio justo en la Corte Penal Internacional en la confluencia de las tradiciones jurídicas", en el que participaron representantes de la Fiscalía de la Corte, el Colegio de Abogados de la Corte Penal Internacional y la iniciativa pro-justicia de Open Society Foundations.
El panel, moderado por Su excelencia el Embajador Paul Wilke, Representante Permanente de los Países Bajos ante la Corte Penal Internacional, examinó las características del sistema jurídico de la Corte Penal Internacional y la forma en que se garantiza la equidad de los juicios ante la Corte en el marco de ese sistema híbrido.
En su discurso de cierre, el Vicepresidente de la Asamblea de los Estados Partes, Su Excelencia el Embajador Sergio Ugalde (Costa Rica), recordó que: "Todos coincidimos en que el objetivo y el propósito del sistema de justicia penal internacional que creamos es ofrecer a las víctimas medios de reparación significativos. Esos medios exigen una lucha comprometida y resuelta contra la impunidad, con independencia del poder que una persona o un grupo de personas puedan tener."
Este acto fue organizado con el apoyo de los gobiernos de Bolivia, Chile y Colombia.
