African Court on Human and Peoples' Rights delegation visits ICC

On 28 May 2018, high-level representatives of the African Court on Human and Peoples' Rights visited the International Criminal Court ("ICC" or "Court") with a view to strengthening the relationship between the two courts and exchanging experiences. The delegation consisted of the African Court's President, Judge Sylvain Oré, five other judges, and its Deputy Registrar, among other distinguished officials.

The visiting delegation engaged with the ICC President and several other judges, the Court's Prosecutor and Registrar, as well as with representatives of the Trust Fund for Victims.  The topics discussed ranged from the substantive jurisprudence of the two courts and challenges related to investigations and trying international crimes to the importance of national implementation of court decisions as well as the importance of State cooperation.

Today's meetings provided an opportunity to further deepen dialogue between the Court and African Court on Human and Peoples' Rights, which both play an important role in strengthening the rule of law in accordance with their respective mandates.  The Court welcomes such exchanges and looks forward to future opportunities for engagement and collaboration.

The African Court on Human and Peoples' Rights is a continental court established by Member States of the African Union to ensure the protection of human and peoples' rights in Africa.  The ICC is an independent, permanent court that tries persons accused of the most serious crimes of concern to the international community as a whole, namely the crime of genocide, crimes against humanity, war crimes and the crime of aggression.
